Today scientists revealed a new device that uses a tiny magnet that can help disabled people steer a wheelchair or operate a computer using only the tip of the tongue. The magnet is only the size of a grain of rice which lets the human direct a wheelchair around a room. It is easily implanted under the tongue, the team at the Georgia Institute of Technology said. For the past few weeks I’ve seen several one-wheeled motorcycle concepts but it’s about time we’ve seen one that’s real. Here’s the UnoCycle, a single-wheel, single-rider vehicle that appears to be based on gyroscopic technology similar to a Segway and, more importantly, has photographic evidence of its existence.

Still in development, the Uno’s top speed is 15 mph, but the inventor, Ben Gulak, suspects it could go as high as 40. That’s no Harley, but it’s faster than a Segway, and remember this is a battery-powered machine that you never need to fill up. (more…)

Currently under construction the Oasis of the Seas will become the largest cruise liner ever built. It’ll include a state-of-the-art travelling city complete with a shopping mall, numerous bars and restaurants, and an outdoor amphitheatre the size of a football field with its own micro-climate and rock-climbing walls. All this will be packed into the 1,081ft long boat.

She is currently being built at a cost of £610million (about 2 billion dollars) in Aker Yards in Turku, Finland and is due to set sail next year. The cruise liner is scheduled to hit the seas in late 2009, when she will operate Caribbean cruises out of Port Everglades in Florida. (more…)

The Enertia is an electric bike that is capable getting 40 miles of driving out of six Lithium Phosphate battery modules. The speed tops out at 50 MPH, but that is more than enough to handle just about any commute. The charge time is three hours, so if you have access to power supply at work, you can charge it up before it comes time to head home. The Enertia certainly seems worth the $12,000 price tag that puts it in the league of BMW and Ducati bikes.

Earlier thoughts for a $100 laptop to be used by “One Laptop per Child”(OLPC) had started to deminish until early this year. Until Group leader, Nicholas Negroponte, brought up a new concept of a keyboardless, dual touch screen, tablet called the XO-2. The combo, computer and 8.9 inch dual touch screens have been estimated a higher price then Negroponte’s acclaimed $150 ticket price. One way OLPC would save enough money to possibly reach their goal of the price set, would be by using two inexpensive Synaptics touchscreens, used by big name companies such as Apple, Dell and Sony. Nope you’re not seeing double. This is the longest phone ever with a touch screen that isn’t to be messed with. It’s called ‘Need’ which consists of 2 touchscreens, one is an OLED that displays basic info, while the other is where the finger play happens. Introducing the Shadow Caddy, a fully autonomous golf club carrying cart that trails behind you automatically. The three-wheeled cart works by following a signal from a transmitter worn on the golfer’s body. Switching the caddy’s setting from “Follow-Me” to “Park” makes sure it never accidentally follows you into a bunker or onto the green.

As of now, trials are being run in a few golf courses in Australia. One reason why this concept is so great it because it’s a clever design, but will also be cheaper renting then a 16 year old snotty kid. (more…)

It knows only 32 words, but someday, it may get a grip on the entire human vocabulary. A group of engineering students at Carnegie Mellon University gave this term a twist and created a hand that talks. The students Bhargav Bhat, Hemant Sikaria, Jorge L. Meza and Wesley Jin demonstrated their project ‘HandTalk‘ a sensor equipped glove that translates finger and hand gestures into spoken words. (more…)
